N.J. has a brand-new Filipino drive-thru feeling. Try the spaghetti with hotdogs! – NJ.com

The only thing more difficult than choosing what to buy at

Jollibee!.?.!? Simply getting on line. The Filipino fast-food chain has 1,300 dining establishments around the world, however the Edison location that opened in June is just the 2nd in New Jersey, dishing out food that's a far cry from McDonald's and Taco Bell. Sweet spaghetti? Noodles with shrimp, egg and garlic sauce? Something called “Chickenjoy”? I was offered, and so is Middlesex County– it's so popular that a law enforcement officer is stationed there to ensure cars and trucks marking time for the drive-thru do not spill out into Route 1.

The entrance was blocked off when I first got there, and I hesitated my Filpino banquet would have to await another day. However the officer just told me to make a U-turn and attempt once again. I did a lap, and the entryway was still blocked off. An opening lastly appeared on my third go-around, and pulling onto the line seemed like beating a video game. My benefit? Fried chicken, spaghetti, a hamburger and more– an array of foods that do not appear to fit but in some way do.

I had actually studied what the popular Southeast Asian chain provided however was still overwhelmed by the choices, all of them accompanied with photos.

Chickenjoy( the chain's fried chicken) is their signature dish, so that was a given. I combined it with”Jolly Spaghetti, “a pasta meal in a sweet tomato sauce in addition to pieces of ham, hotdog and cheese, the meal that most captivated me. Palabok Fiesta is a noodle meal including garlic sauce, shrimp, pork rind and egg– quickly the most ambitious dish I've ever ordered from a drive-thru window.

It was either going to be tasty or a disaster, and I needed to find out. I was bummed to discover their chicken sandwich was not offered– I was wanting to compare it to the Popeyes and Chick-fil-A sandwiches that went viral last summer season. They were out of french fries, too. Odd. I went for a Yumburger with cheese and signature dressing– and a peach mango piefor dessert. Jollibee's personnel must be used to the insane

need, due to the fact that the line of cars and trucks was long however moved fairly quickly. I had my food in 15 minutes. Not precisely junk food, however quick adequate considering the length of time the line was. And man-oh-man was the wait, for the most unlikely junk food meal of my life, was well worth it. Palabok Fiesta, a Filipino noodle dish with garlic sauce, crushed pork rind, shrimp and egg, from Jollibee in Edison.(Jeremy Schneider|NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) Palabok Fiesta I'm a sucker for any noodle meal. I wasn't so sure how well a junk food dining establishment could handle it, however they pulled it off well enough. Whatever was strong, absolutely nothing blew me away. The noodles were overcooked for my taste, however the sauce and pork were tasty together. I anticipated drive-thru shrimp to be a train wreck but they were more succulent than I expected. I'm thankful I gave it a shot. A Yumburger from Jollibee in Edison.(Jeremy Schneider|NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) Yumburger

=”F5P6X62L7FFENNL7GPOBUG2B5A”> They call it a”Yumburger,”but it truthfully didn't look all that yum to me. It looked small and dry. The truth that Jollibee serves such a standard fast food product along with a lot of unconventional ones had me curious regardless, which interest was rewarded. It was definitely little, but it packed serious flavor. The patty is soft and tender, practically like Salisbury steak (a compliment).

The meat was on the sweeter side, and the burger's signature mayo-esque dressing just added to that. It might be off-putting for some who expect hamburgers to be mouthwatering, however I found it to be among the most unusually pleasing hamburgers I've ever tasted.

Jolly Spaghetti Jollibee

The Jolly Spaghetti at Jollibee in Edison. Spaghetti in a sweet tomato sauce together with portions of ham and hot dog, topped with cheese. (Jeremy Schneider|NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) Jolly Spaghetti This was the item I was certainly most thrilled to attempt. Spaghetti is nearly as necessary to the New Jersey culinary experience as bagels, pizza and Taylor ham. And the Filipino handle the dish differs from anything I ‘d ever become aware of. The sauce is sweet, loaded with pieces of ham and hot dog in addition to hamburger and topped with cheese. Yep, you read that right, sweet spaghetti. I kind of enjoyed it. I almost recoiled after the first bite because it is jarringly different

than the marinara and Bolognese sauces that the Garden State prides itself on. However different isn't bad! The sweet taste was certainly an adjustment, however I discovered myself digging in once again and again. The ham and hot dog weren't precisely guanciale and speck, the treated meats you ‘d discover in some Italian food, however it's the exact same idea. Pork includes savory richness to sauce, which is especially key when the base is on the sweet side. The noodles were also shockingly al dente. I expected to take a few bites– I housed the whole thing.

I had high expect the Chickenjoy. Friends had actually raved to me about it, and it's one of the chain's flagship items. In all sincerity, it was something of a disappointment. Not bad, per se, however unremarkable compared to other junk food fried chicken I've had. There was a good crunch, but it wasn't as crispy as Bon Chon chicken. I bought it spicy, but didn't pack the delicious heat of Chick-fil-A. The gravy it came with for dipping wasn't much different than what you get at KFC. If that's what you like? Cool. However I was expecting more.

Peach mango pie at Jollibee

A hot peach mango pie from Jollibee in Edison. (Jeremy Schneider|NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) Peach mango pie The McDonald's hot apple pie is a fast-food icon. Jollibee's peach mango pie is way much better, and not even if apple pie is exaggerated in general. A foodie good friend had actually discussed it several times to me, and now I see why. It was hot, crispy and breaking with fruity goodness. Peach and mango are two difficult fruits that can easily taste synthetic. I question there's any person picking peaches and mangos behind the Jollibee, however these tasted as fresh as you could get out of a fast food dessert.

The decision Jollibee is far from your typical junk food, which's the point. Want a normal hamburger? Go to McDonald's. Afraid to attempt something new with your pasta? Keep going to your local Italian area. However if you're searching for a taste of Filipino fast-food, get on line. If you can.
