EDISON– A 31-year-old Essex County guy has been apprehended and charged in connection with fatally striking a Brooklyn motorcyclist in the location of Route 1 near Grandview Avenue last weekend.
Roland Q. Lyles of Orange was apprehended Saturday and charged with worsened assault, a second-degree criminal activity, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said in a declaration.
Lyles' charges were upgraded Wednesday following the death of the victim, 51-year-old Richard Diaz. The brand-new charges consist of intensified murder, a first-degree crime, automobile murder, a second-degree crime, and driving with a suspended license and triggering the death of another person, a third-degree criminal offense, according to the declaration.
Lyles also was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license, the statement stated.
READ: Middlesex County swears in very first woman as district attorney A cops investigation figured out that at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday, Lyles was driving a white Nissan Sentra northbound on Route 1 near Grandview Avenue at a high rate of speed when he apparently struck Diaz's bike, according to the declaration.
Diaz was carried to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick following the crash where he passed away Tuesday, the declaration said.
