To Support Struggling Businesses, Lakeview Chiropractor Lets Neighbors Put Local Treats On Her Tab – Block Club Chicago

24August 2020

LAKEVIEW– Whether it's an open-faced sandwich from Doppio or Coffee Lab's lavender mocha, Ria Tjiong wants everyone to try her favorite community deals with– just ask to put it on her tab.

Every weekend considering that May, Tjiong has put down $100 at a regional small company and welcomed next-door neighbors to drop in for a treat on her.

The project began as a way of rallying people behind stores navigating the coronavirus pandemic, however her efforts have grown into a little movement of Lakeview organisations supporting each other to survive the pandemic.

“When times are difficult, like right now, it's a community effort to love each other and ensure we prop up the local small companies so they can make it through this,” stated Tjiong, owner of Truly Chiropractic at 3058 N. Lincoln Ave. “If you don't have the money, simply put it on my tab.”

Every Friday, Tjiong purchases a present card for services to keep by their register through the weekend and swipe whenever clients say they're buying from “Dr. Ria's Tab.” She promotes the giveaways online through her social media pages and Lakeview community Facebook groups.

Tjiong said she began the weekly giveaways to raise awareness about businesses that were open and to help individuals whose budgets are tight throughout the pandemic.

“So numerous people are now jobless on top of currently having costs, debt and living paycheck to paycheck,” Tjiong stated. “The very first thing to go is discretionary costs like costly coffee or treats, so I wished to spread out a little cheer while helping organisations.”

Lincoln business corridor at 3054 N. Greenview Ave. Since then, she's spent more than $1,500 on the weekly free gifts.” Dr. Ria is just an angel and a really great spirit for Lakeview,”stated Murat Selcuk, who owns Doppio with his partner, Sandra.”These mom-and-pop stores bring a personal connection to the area that you can't get anywhere else, so we require to make certain they can stay open.”

Selcuk said Doppio is understood for its signature open-faced sandwiches— Tjiong's preferred is the salmon on multigrain– and “Rise and Shine” oat meal bars, which his other half started making after they resumed in late April.

Selcuk said Tjiong's tab generated new consumers who have become regulars because May.

Tjiong hopes others are inspired to introduce similar initiatives promoting local companies throughout the pandemic.

David Owens, who owns pet supply shop Barks N' Rec with husband Josh Moore, said they were influenced to pay it forward by partnering with regional vendors and artisans who were displaced by celebrations and craft shows canceled by the pandemic.

After Tjiong left a $100 tab at their Barks N' Rec, located at 3030 N. Lincoln Ave., the couple hosted premium pet dog deal with business Squishy Face & & Co. for a weekend pop-up.

“We simply opened in May and Dr. Ria's shoutout created buzz from consumers who normally wouldn't drop in here,” Owens stated. “Lakeview consumers wish to go shopping local and support small companies like us, so we wished to pass it on in any way we could.”

Given that Tjiong started her weekly giveaways, at least five Lakeview next-door neighbors have actually started tabs of their own at other regional organisations.

“If I can motivate someone to do a spin-off in Lincoln Park, Steeterville, Bridgeport or any other communities, my mission would be satisfied,” Tjiong said.
